The Spirit of Charity and Thanksgiving in the RCM Community

By: Jena Eggert

As we enter the season of gratitude and giving, the November edition of RCM Connections is dedicated to the spirit of charity and its profound effects on both personal and professional levels. At RCR|HUB, we recognize that charitable involvement strengthens the Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) community and fosters deeper connections among industry professionals.

The Reach and Impact of U.S. Charities

The United States is home to a vibrant and robust network of non-profit organizations committed to helping communities thrive. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS):

As of January 2, 2024, there were approximately 1.8 million nonprofit organizations in the United States ranging from small, local initiatives to national and international charities.

Candid Learning?

  • Approximately 63 million Americans—around 25% of adults—volunteer their time each year, underscoring the nation’s commitment to making a difference.

National Center for Children in Poverty

  • In 2023, Americans charitable giving totaled $557.16 billion. Giving reached a high in current dollars but did not outpace inflation.

Why Charity Matters to the RCM Community

Being part of a charity can profoundly impact individuals and organizations alike. For professionals in RCM, engaging in charitable work can:

  • Enhance Workplace Morale: Employees involved in charitable initiatives often report greater job satisfaction and a stronger sense of community within their teams.

  • Foster Purpose and Well-Being: Giving back promotes a sense of fulfillment and contributes to better mental and emotional health.

  • Improve Company Reputation: Organizations that participate in or support charitable efforts are seen more favorably, fostering trust and goodwill with clients, partners, and the wider community.

A Noteworthy Insight: Volunteering is not just good for the soul—it’s also good for health. Research shows that individuals who volunteer regularly tend to have lower stress levels and improved overall well-being.

Thanksgiving 2024: Time Off and Travel Trends

Thanksgiving is a cherished holiday that offers a moment to pause, reflect, and connect with loved ones. This year, Thanksgiving falls on November 28th, and trends suggest:

  • Time Off: Many workers in the U.S., including those in Revenue Cycle, plan to take two to four days off, extending the holiday into a long weekend or even an entire week to maximize family time and personal relaxation.

  • On November 4th, The Vacationer released its annual 2024 Thanksgiving Travel Survey, finding that nearly 51% of American adults (ages 18 and up) plan to travel for Thanksgiving this year, representing a sizable increase from the 45% reported in last year's survey.

Balancing Work, Charity, and Time Off in Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management

Balancing work, charitable efforts, and personal time can be challenging but rewarding, especially during the holiday season. Here are a few strategies to maintain balance:

  • Plan Ahead for Charity Initiatives: Scheduling volunteer activities or charity events early helps ensure participation without disrupting workflow.

  • Offer Flexibility: Providing flexible schedules can encourage team members to engage in charitable activities during the holiday season.

  • Promote Group Involvement: Team-based volunteer events foster camaraderie while making meaningful contributions to the community.

 Embracing the Season of Giving

As we reflect on the year’s milestones, challenges, and successes, I encourage our RCM CommUnity to embrace the season’s spirit. Whether through volunteering, donations, or supporting local charities, every act of kindness helps build a stronger, more connected community.

At RCR|HUB, we’re committed to leading by example and supporting the growth of charitable initiatives within RCM. As we come together to celebrate Thanksgiving, let’s remember the power of giving and its lasting impact on both the giver and receiver.
